Project Contents
In recent years, there have been improvements in relations between Japan and China, and the Chinese people are in general better disposed towards the people of Japan. However, with little information on Japan to hand and few opportunities for direct exchange, there is a fundamental lack of understanding of Japan at the level of the general public. Opinions regarding Japan among the Chinese public are largely formed by the Internet, as well as by the print and visual media. In order to promote understanding of Japan among the Chinese people and disseminate accurate information regarding Japan, this project will provide opportunities for influential young Chinese journalists active on the Internet or in print media to experience a broad spectrum of Japanese politics, culture and society. These activities can be expected to increase understanding of Japan among young journalists with influence in the print media and Internet circles in China.
Implementation Plan
In the final year of the three-year project, the following activities will be carried out.
- Preparatory activities for the field study in Japan
Discussion will be held with the Chinese secretariat (Tsinghua-Nikkei Institute of Media Studies, Tsinghua University) regarding various aspects of the program, including selection of individuals to visit Japan, themes for the field study, and places to visit. Liaison, coordination, departure procedures, hosting of preparatory conferences, and all other necessary activities to be carried out before the visit will be outsourced to the secretariat. Twelve young journalists and editors active on the front line of the print, visual and Internet media will be invited to visit Japan. - Field trip to Japan
The party will be invited to Japan at the end of October 2010. All travel-related tasks concerning the visit will be outsourced to a Japanese travel agency.
- Visiting period: 10 days, 9 nights
- Activities during the visit: The party will visit Tokyo and other regions to experience Japanese politics, economy, society and culture. During the visit, the party will have with opportunities to talk to, exchange opinions with and interview Japanese individuals active in the same industry or line of work.
- Summary meeting
Upon the group's return, the Chinese secretariat will assemble project participants and government media relations officers at a summary meeting to exchange information and publicize the results of the Japan visit
